The five-minute routine that buys an extra season
Most premium marine accessories die not because they wear out during the sailing season but because winter storage finishes them off. Stagnant moisture, freeze-thaw cycles on a boat trailer, UV through a tarp gap, all worse than a full season of use.
Five minutes per accessory at haul-out gets you an extra season per part. Maybe two.
The routine
For each RailClamp accessory still mounted on the rail:
1. Remove. Don't leave it on. Mounted in winter storage is worse than packed away in a drawer. Take 60 seconds to back the A4 hex bolts off, slide the mount free, drop both halves in a labelled bag.
2. Rinse with fresh water and a soft brush. Pay attention to the bolt thread inserts — salt crystallizes in the threads and prevents them from re-torquing cleanly in spring. A toothbrush works.
3. Dry completely. Towel dry the matte surface, then air-dry for an hour out of direct sun before bagging. Trapped moisture is what causes the white surface haze you sometimes see on stored 3D-printed parts.
4. Inspect the TPU shock insert. If it's still elastic and bounces back when you pinch it, it's fine. If it's compressed flat or shows tears, mail us at care@adriafab.com — we'll replace it at material cost.
5. Bag and tag. A 9×12 cm zip-top bag per part with a Sharpie label of the rail size and mount type. Three years from now when you wonder which mount fits the 28 mm rail on the new boat, the bag tells you.
Storage location
Indoors. Heated if possible, but a cold-but-dry garage is fine. Avoid:
- The boat itself in a shrink-wrap winter cocoon. Condensation cycles are brutal.
- A trailer-mounted boat. Vibration during road transport works the cradle loose enough that the next spring it doesn't hold spec.
- Direct contact with ferrous metal toolboxes. Galvanic potential between A4 stainless bolts and mild steel is a real thing.
A plastic storage tote with the zip-top bagged parts inside, on a shelf in a heated garage, is ideal.
Spring restart
In spring, before re-installing, do two things:
- Brief soap rinse to remove any storage dust.
- Snug torque check on the A4 hex bolts. Hand-tight is enough, a quarter turn beyond contact.
That's the full checklist. Five minutes per part in autumn, two minutes per part in spring, and you'll get 10 seasons out of a €29 mount. The math works out to less than €0.50 per outing across the life of the part.
